Are We the Church You've Been Looking For?

A liberal religious voice in the Central Valley since 1953.

Some of our web visitors are looking for a church. We offer some things that many churches do not. We might be just the church you are looking for. On the other hand, we might not be it. If you are looking for a mainline protestant church close to your home with a large youth group, we can give you some recommendations, but we're not it.

Do you want a church that asks you to think for yourself?
We don't claim to have all the answers. We do claim to ask lots of questions. We respect the Torah, Bible and Koran, but we don't think any one of them has all the answers. Our denomination's hymnal has readings from eight of the world's major religions and some gifted poets who didn't fit into any particular slot.

Do you want a church that sanctions mixed marriages?
We have, or have had, member couples who are Catholic and Jewish, Anglican and Buddhist, Mormon and Presbyterian, black and white. We welcome gays and lesbians, too, although they don't count as "mixed" and they can't get married yet. We don't have many gay or lesbian members. If you are looking for a predominately gay and lesbian congregation, the Metropolitan Community Church is your best bet. The nearest congregation is Valley Ministries, in Stockton.

Do you want a church that welcomes diversity?
Only two-thirds of our members believe in God. You can't get much more diverse than that and still be a church. It's a bit too diverse for some people. We have Agnostics, Atheists, Buddhists, Christians, Gnostics, Humanists, Jews, Pagans, Taoists, Theists and Wiccans among us.

Do you want a church that will teach your children about different religions?
Our Sunday School program runs in a three-year cycle. We do a year on Unitarians and Universalists, a year on the Judeo-Christian religion, and a year on World religions.

Do you want a church that embraces science?
If the Pope had been a UU when Galileo discovered that the earth went around the sun, he would have made Galileo a saint. We don't think all the mysteries of the Universe have been unveiled yet. We don't think the Bible is everything you need to understand those mysteries. If science and religion differ, we're willing to admit religion - or at least the people who interpreted religion in the past centuries - may have been wrong.
